Jean Roi Cap Provincial Rosé by Anthonij Rupert Wyne is a premium Provençal-style rosé - a worthy rival to some of the world's best.

The premium Rosé category in recent years has exploded onto the international stage, none more so than Provençal-style Rosé. The unique combination of Limestone and Clay soils, the incredibly varied terrain, sun and Mistral wind producing some of the driest, coral-coloured, sought after Rosé in the world.

The Jean Roi range was born of the fact that the Cape Province as a winegrowing region offers all of the above, so why not make our own Cap Provincial Rose to rival some of the best in the world?

Who was Jean Roi?

Jean Roi was amongst the 150 exiled French Huguenots who emigrated to the Cape and settled in Olifantshoek (what was to become Franschhoek) between 1688 and 1689. Roi was granted 60 morgen (approximately 51 Ha) and named it after his hometown Lourmarin in Provence. Today the farm L’Ormarins remains one of the first farms in the area and home to Jean Roi Cap Provincial Rosé.

The name ‘Provence’ was derived from the Roman name ‘Provincia Nostra’, simply meaning ‘Our Province’. Life in our own province is synonymous with glorious Spring and Long Summer days to be enjoyed outdoors at the coast or in the winelands alongside fresh meals prepared from some of the Cape’s best produce, our very own Provence. Ever alert to industry opportunities and gaps in the market, Johann Rupert commissioned the team at Anthonij Rupert Wyne to research and investigate the premium South African Rosé category in 2014 and ‘15.

The Cape coastal region

Similar to the terroir of Provence, the Cape Coastal region offers up the perfect terrain for the cultivation of the traditional Provençal cultivars (Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah), including incredibly varied terrain, ample sun, a cooling breeze from the ocean and a combination of limestone and clay soils in which these cultivars find the ultimate expression of the Cape. Sourced from great old vineyards in the Coastal regions of South Africa, made in a Provençal-style with the traditional grape varietals of Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, depending on the vintage, we aim to make beautifully dry, quintessential South African, coral wines on par with those so prized internationally.
