Allan Mullins was a legend who sadly passed away on Christmas Day, 2020. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and all those who loved him. His quick smile and generous, fun-loving nature will be very much missed.
Allan was a personality of note in the wine industry who made a positive impact on so many.
I remember when he told me he had gone surfing with a couple of winemaker/surfers who had made it happen a few years ago - he just beamed! See the pics HERE

The outpouring of love for Allan and his family have been extraordinary, but we are not surprised... he was an extraordinary man.

We have compiled a few tributes to Allan from those who loved him dearly.

From Terran Williams (Allan's stepson) on his Facebook entry

Thank you so much for the flood of love for our family after Allan Mullins' passing. Wow, we're blown away.
His memorial is going to happen this coming Sunday at 3:30pm (South African time). Woolworths (Allan put their wine on the map) kindly has offered to help us zoom it to you all. Consider yourself so, so welcome. Link to follow.
I can't wait to honour him, one of the greatest people I ever met, he has left an imprint on so many of us—inspiring us to less self-pity and excuse-making and more courage, tenacity, zest for life and love for people.

From The Institute of Cape Wine Masters

We are heartbroken this Christmas morning to learn of the passing of one of our stalwarts.
Allan Mullins was one of the true and original Cape Wine Masters. He was the sixth to join our ranks. Graduated in 1986, Allan has contributed immensely to the wine industry with his tenacity and grace.
He shared his passion for wine with everybody that he met and lived a full life with great food and amazing wines. We honour a true ambassador of South African wines and a wine legend.
We will remember him for his exceptional tasting ability, wit and generous smile. Condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in Peace, Allan.

From Amorim Cork

The recent death of Allan Mullins leaves a hole in the wine world that is not going to be filled. For Amorim, Allan was an especial source of inspiration and endearing colleague due to his love for and knowledge of Cap Classique, a South African wine style we have been supporting for 20 years through the annual Amorim Cap Classique Challenge.

Allan was arguably the world’s leading expert on Cap Classique. His dissertation on this sector of the industry, which earned him a Cape Wine Master qualification in 1986, was followed by a life-long commitment to what he loved to call simply “bubbly”. Since the beginning of the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge, Allan frequently served as judge and convenor, his knowledge bringing an unrivalled level of expertise to this competition. Not only did his refined palate create a supremely high standard of criteria on which the wines were selected, but he also inspired and mentored a large number of winemakers and other judges in the technique and skill required to assess Cap Classique.

From Emile Joubert

The late Allan Mullins, one of my favourite pictures of him. At a Cap Classique event with Liezel van der Westhuizen - he always asked me to seat him next to a pretty girl. Allan passed-away this morning and I am shocked that this ghastly year closes with the end of a life that gave many so much joy and inspiration. Obviously, Allan was known as an expert on wine, the kind some will call a boffin. Somehow we never got around to huge conversations on acids and autolysis of whole-bunch fermentation. He liked chatting about rugby, friends and places to eat. Wine was just "amazing" or "delicious". Thoughts to Therese and his family, and the best I and all who Allan him is to remind them of the way he touched all our lives. Godspeed Allan, you Jackal. Every day was your day.

**

We will all miss you Allan and we are sure there are many bubblies popping to receive you wherever you are.
