Yvonne Lester, head winemaker at Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, will be leaving the company after nearly two decades.

Yvonne began her career at Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons in September 2001, appointed by the late Anthonij Rupert to the position of Assistant Winemaker. In 2005 she was tasked with the responsibility to manage the entire winemaking department as Winemaker. With the subsequent rapid advancement of the brand, came her appointment as Head Winemaker in 2012. It was in this role that she played a pivotal part in managing the production expansion of the Rupert & Rothschild wines. Currently, Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, can undoubtedly be described as one of South Africa’s leading premium wine brands.

Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons presented Yvonne with a chance to embark on her winemaking career in South Africa and gave her the opportunity to work for two of the most respected and influential families globally. An honour which she will forever cherish and be thankful for.

“It has been an unbelievable journey in every respect. I have seen the brand and the people behind it, grow in leaps and bounds. It has been gratifying to be a part of this immensely successful chapter. At the same time, I have grown with the brand and am proud of what the team has accomplished”, she reflects

“What I will miss the most when I leave? Unquestionably my team! Over the years we have built an amazing tight squad in the cellar, which has remained constant over the years. The personal development and growth of each individual has been a privilege to witness and makes me particularly proud. The key has been our mutual respect for one another and our shared vision - to remain relentless in our quest to build and uphold the highest quality and standards of winemaking. In doing so, I believe we have created a strong foundation to carry the Rupert & Rothschild brand forward.”

“Winemaking will always be my passion and my family have been actively involved in the South African wine industry for over seven decades. Going forward, my intention is to explore new opportunities in the wine industry, after a well-deserved rest with my family.”
