Saxenburg
Saxenburg is proud to announce the appointment of Dirk van Zyl as our 4th ever head winemaker.

Saxenburg is proud to announce the appointment of Dirk van Zyl, as our 4th ever head winemaker, effective as of 2 December 2019. Dirk grew up on a wine farm, his chosen profession, therefore, ingrained from an early age. He graduated Cum Laude from Stellenbosch University with a BSc. in Viticulture and Oenology and went on to spend 4 years at Kleine Zalze, 7 months in the USA and was then appointed Junior Winemaker at DeMorgenzon. It is here that his love of the unique terroir of the Bottelary Hills was instilled, with Saxenburg now offering him the opportunity to explore its many facets unrestrained.

Dirk will be joined by famed young gun, and longtime Saxenburg neighbour, Reenen Borman in a consultation capacity from the 2019 vintage onwards. Given Reenen’s success and commitment to Shiraz, we believe him to be the perfect addition to our fledgling new team given our own commitment to Bottelary Hills Shiraz.

Now in the second generation of Bührers, Saxenburg is run by siblings Vincent and Fiona Bührer. Together they ascribe to the philosophy that wine is a place, with tremendous emphasis placed on respecting the local terroir, applied viticulture and remaining relevant in ever-changing times. A philosophy they share with Dirk and look forward to explore as they usher in a new generation of winemaking at Saxenburg together.

Saxenburg produces several wine ranges, including The Guinea Fowl Collection, The Private Collection and our flagship Shiraz, The Saxenburg Shiraz Select.
