The last seat to the National finals of the South African Wine Tasting Championships has been won at the Tops@Spar Wine Show held on Sat 13th July.

In a very exciting environment, 6 wines were offered blind to more than 130 competitors, creating a long queue for the avid wine lovers.

To spice up the competition, one of the wines served blind was slightly different from the shortlist given the visitors flocking the Grand West Casino to discover wines curated by Tops @ Spar wine show. Full points were given to the candidates finding Chenin blanc 2019 on the wine number three, regardless the producer…

With this extra hurdle, experience prevailed and Heidi Kritzinger won the Cape Town trophy just one point ahead of Renet Strydom and Dr Gavin Smith. Heidi works at Kanonkop and qualified previously for Team South Africa in 2016.

The wines selected were Meerhof White Blend 2018, Seven Springs Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Imbuko Chenin Blanc 2019, Doolhof Malbec 2016, Koelenbosch Sangiovese 2017 and Libby’s Pride Shiraz 2016. The choice of more exotic cultivars like Malbec or Sangiovese was an extra difficulty to select the best of the best.

Heidi Kritzinger will be joining the 14 other best tasters qualified for the national finals to be held on Sunday 21st June which will decide Team Nederburg 2019.

Team Nederburg will fly to France in October for the World Blind Tasting challenge, facing 28 countries for the ultimate wine tasting crown.
