Jocund June! We witnessed the best of South African wine at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Awards and were blown away by Capetonian supertasters at the SA Wine Tasting Championships. We were treated to an exceptional experience at Beyerskloof and, when faced with multiple birthdays, a farewell and one welcome, we did what comes naturally when you work with wine, we threw a party!

Old Mutual Trophy Awards - Jeremy Borg of Painted Wolf wins Most Successful Producer

The Old Mutual Trophy Awards for 2019 were announced on Tues 4 June at the Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town on a wintry and rainy day.
An elated Jeremy Borg from Painted Wolf received his Most Successful Producer Award with such glee - what a delight to see.  And so well-deserved to the nicest and most hard-working team.  He also walked away with the Trophy for Best Niche White Variety - for the Painted Wolf Roussanne 2018, and the Trophy for Best Niche Red Variety which went to their Painted Wolf Black Pack Mourvèdre 2017

South African Wine Tasting Championships, Cape Town 2019 - Samarie Smith and Georgio Meletiou

The Cape Town leg of the South African Wine Tasting Championships (SAWTC) 2019 took place on 1 June at the Taj Hotel, with Samarie Smith winning the top spot and a guaranteed place for the finals on 21st July at the Taj Hotel again.

"It's really something else being led around a room to taste 50 wines, armed with a little notebook, a pen and unwarranted confidence..." - Ed.

The wine.co.za team visit the home of Pinotage at Beyerskloof

I can't believe in all my years in the wine industry that I have not yet actually sat down at Beyerskloof to enjoy their delicious Pinotage Burger.

Not only was the wine.co.za team treated to a tour and full tasting through the extensive Beyerskloof portfolio by the very enthusiastic Christiaan van der Heever, but we got to enjoy the wines alongside their full menu, starting with (yummy) garlic pizza, Pinotage Salami and then of course the juicy Pinotage Burger, followed by desserts to keep the pudding tummy happy for a long time.

Celebrations, Welcomes and Farewells at wine.co.za

It is always difficult to say goodbye - especially to people who have become friends.  Our team is small (only 12 of us) and June saw Trudie leaving, Malannie turning 40, Sheryl, Xanthe & Kevin celebrating birthdays (no numbers!). We took the opportunity to welcome our new Content Marketer, Thomas Davidson who will be replacing Trudie as Editor and Social Media Manager.

We are always happy to have an excuse for a party, so Judy cooked up scrummy garlic-infused lamb shwarmas which we paired with yummy Cab and of course bubbles!
