erdeberg Winery is situated in the foothills of The Paardeberg on the Paarl Wine Appellation. Named for the ‘wilde paarden’ as the early Dutch settlers described them, the Cape Mountain Zebra which in earlier times roamed the mountain.

Perdeberg has over the last couple of years embarked on a fine wine programme which has seen several new wine ranges appear, amongst them the Dryland Collection and The Vineyard Collection, and some fabulous single vineyards wines like the Endura Chenin Blanc, a masterpiece by Albertus Louw, the Cellarmaster.

The Perdeberg Soft Smooth Range started off with a red. Deliciously sappy and easy to drink, I have spoken well of it before and proclaimed it easy to drink. Sounds like damning a wine with faint praise, but the opposite is true. Who wants to drink a wine that is difficult to drink? The Soft Smooth Range has recently had a packaging makeover and is looking really smart. Sets up the expectation of a good glass.

The Perdeberg Soft Smooth Rosé 2018 is a lovely wine to drink at a time of relaxation, as a mid-morning refresher or at sundown when a glass of good wine is required.

It looks like
Bottled in a clear glass bottle with the enchanting zebra striped screw cap. In the glass, it is a vibrant cherry blossom pink. And when chilled and covered with dew, it is very inviting.

It smells like
Generous fruit, strawberries.

It tastes like
From entry, a fine line of acidity running through with the sappy aftertaste. The flavours are all of strawberry, chunky sweet watermelon and pink spun sugar. Nice mouthfeel.

It’s good with
Makes a fabulous Pink Sangria. Lots of fruit, tot or two of Tequila, top up with half soda, half lemonade, lots of ice. And delicious. Nina Timm’s Japanese Salmon Noodle Stir Fry is a perfect companion to the Perdeberg Soft Smooth Rosé 2018. Click here for her recipe.

The food offering a Perdeberg is always a good one. Lovely country food cooked by ladies who know what they are doing. The Winter Picnic, which was a masterpiece, has been succeeded by a Braai Picnic - do book on advance. Good day trip into the country and a chance to load up your car boot with some fine and even handedly priced wines.
