No doubt you will have seen the powerful images on social media of the fires that have engulfed parts of Elgin and have threatened countless vineyards in the area.

It has been noted that the fire, which started on Saturday, has destroyed over 3000 hectares of vegetation and a number of structures.

Michelle van Staden from the Elgin Valley Wine Guild informs us that currently, whilst the fire has not been extinguished, it is contained. Certain hotspots are being monitored for any flare-ups.

Wineries in the area are reporting that they are safe though the fire took four days to bring under control and damaged or destroyed 13 homes.

Word from the FPA Coordinator is that they do have enough food for today but all non perishables are always welcome;  Water, energy drinks, energy bars, chocolates, biscuits and chips are perfect as they can be grabbed and eaten on-the-go.

It is so important that we remain vigilent at this time and stay aware of fire risks. Rumors are circulating of someone deliberately starting the fire though no confirmation has been received.
Please do not throw cigarettes out of your car windows and do not have open fires amongst dry grass land.
