The country’s biggest online store abruptly pulled its entire liquor catalogue from its website over two weeks ago.
Since then, the Takealot Liquor category has only consisted of non-alcoholic beverages such as regular cold drinks and mixers regularly paired with liquor.
Reddit users complaining about the issue also said that trying to check out with alcoholic beverages they previously added to their baskets would result in a 404 error.
Online shoppers could not buy beer, wine, spirits, or other alcoholic beverages from Takealot a few days before Christmas and the entire week leading up to New Year’s Eve.
Many South Africans like to enjoy drinks with family and friends over this holiday period, which makes it one of the most lucrative sales seasons for liquor.
With the issue going unresolved for several days, users started to speculate that Takealot’s liquor licence might have expired or had been suspended, rather than the problem being related to Takealot’s logistics or technical systems.
