South Africa’s top sommeliers recently selected their top wines in the annual South African Sommeliers Selection Competition. This competition aims to highlight the country’s top ‘food wines’ and lists these in categories consumers can typically expect to find on a winelist.

Showcasing its remarkable drinkability, Overhex Wines International’s Survivor Offspring Red Blend impressed with a listing in a very suitable category: ‘Fresh and Juicy Reds’.

Winning wines, referred to as “Listed Wines”, are listed on the sought-after Sommeliers Selection wine list. This wine list is distributed countrywide to trade and restaurants. All listed wines carry The Sommeliers Selection seal of approval, which is identified as a gold sticker and neck tag.

Entries are judged blind, and scrutinised for their food appropriateness and their gastronomical relevance. The judging panel considers the stylistic approach to wines, their regionality and price points.

The Survivor Offspring Red is a blend of Syrah, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon, made from grapes grown in the Swartland. It has exceptionally smooth tannins, which contributes to its enjoyability – a key characteristic which is underscored with sommeliers in this competition befittingly listing it under the ‘Fresh and Juicy Reds’ category.

Says Ben Snyman, head winemaker at Overhex Wines International: “My team and I are very happy with this appropriate listing. ‘Fresh and juicy’ is exactly how I’d describe this Cape Red Blend, a generous fruit-forward red wine that is particularly well-suited to a South African favourite, venison pie.”

The judges in this competition included Pearl Oliver (Taj Cape Town), Billet Magara (Oyster Box Hotel), Joseph Dafana (La Colombe), Esmé Groenewald, Barry Schofield, Joakim Blackadder, and associated judges Melusi Magodhi (Ellerman House) and Minnie Mthombeni (Karibu restaurant).

The recommended retail price of the Survivor Offspring Red Blend is R75 per bottle.
